Building a well-trained professor air force is a challenge common to most African countries. Hence it’s no surprise that what gives the NAF the edge over its regional peer is professionalism andtraining .
Nigeria is home to the best Flight Training School in the region.
The starting point for the making of all Nigerian air force pilots who are all commissioned officers is the 401 Flying Training School in Kaduna.
All officer cadets to be trained as pilots must have first enlisted at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
In their 5th year at the Nigerian Defence Academy, potential pilots report at the 401 Flying Training School, where they are given an initial briefing.
After which they report to the 061 aeromedical centre Kaduna, for a comprehensive medical check up to determine if they are medically fit for flying.
PHASE 1: PRIMARY FLYING TRAINING
For those found to be medically fit, it is now time for training as pilots in the Nigerian Air Force.
PHASE 2: GROUND SCHOOL
Thereafter student pilots undergo survival training at the NAF Field Base in Bauchi. The aim of which is to prepare them to survive in any environment in the event they are forced to eject over hostile territory with little hope of a quick rescue.
Following the survival training, student pilots are then ready to start actual flying in a simulator.
