In October 2016, the Nigerian Army launched the first Motorcycle Battalion. This new combat unit will use specially modified motorcycles in its operation against Boko Haram in the rough and vast terrains of the Sambisa forest. This will bring about the reduction of response time to emergencies.
At 66,000 sqr kilometres the Sambisa forest is 12 times the size of Lagos. Covering such distances will be a logistical nightmare for any army. Hence the the launch of the Motorcycle Battalion is designed to provide the Nigerian army the capacity to move faster to meet up with the challenges of insecurity in the hinterlands, where movement of motor vehicles cannot reach and where foot patrols becomes a challenge.
Three thousand men selected from the 25 Task Force Brigade Brigade make up the NA Combat Motorbike Battalion.
