The Presidential Guards Brigade is President Muhammadu Buhari’s personal protection force. It is a military unit that operates outside the conventional framework of the Nigerian Army. They are a group of elite Nigerian soldiers which guards the residence of the President and his guests, as well as perform ceremonial duties.
They stand at the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock and also raise and lower the national flag at ceremonies and parades.
The home of Nigeria’s President is among the most heavily guarded building in the world. Aso Rock is heavily protected at all times by five thousand armed guards, making it impossible for Nigerians to enter area, unless you are imvted of course. The Presidential Guard comprises of both men and women.
It’s unclear whether the “Presidential Guard” designation is simply intended to reflect the elite status of the unit or whether it also performs defence functions as well, its probably a bit of both. It is, however a combat formation, akin to the American Secret Service.
